Compose is looking for an assistant managing editor. This role involves an interesting combination of responsibilities, including reading submissions, copyediting, and managing social media. For the right candidate, this could be an amazing opportunity to gain some valuable editing experience in a fun and flexible environment.

Assistant Managing Editor

Under the supervision of the managing editor, the assistant managing editor will

  • read and evaluate submissions (mostly fiction, but occasionally other genres);
  • upload and format pieces to be published in each issue;
  • copyedit contributor profiles for house style;
  • source and format content for Compose‘s social media accounts;
  • upload, format, copyedit and schedule blog posts submitted by contributors and guest writers;
  • find, crop, resize, and upload creative commons photographs to WordPress;
  • issue final proofs to contributors; and
  • incorporate final corrections before new issues are published.

Think you might be our ideal candidate? Consider the following:

  • Do you have verifiable creative writing and/or editing experience?
  • Are you proficient in written English?
  • Do you have experience using WordPress, Google Drive, email, word processors, and spreadsheets?
  • Do you have a basic understanding of HTML code (what it is, how it affects the way text displays on the web, and how to strip it out of a document)?
  • Do you have experience using social media?
  • Do you have outstanding time-management skills?
  • Do you have reliable access to a computer and internet connection?

Time commitment: Three hours per week

Start date: ASAP

Closing date: Open until position is filled

Hours: Varies according to our production schedule, but an average of 3 hours per week overall

Location: Work from home, anywhere in the world

Payment: Compose is a free publication and charges no reading fees (as many other journals do these days), so at this time we are unable to compensate our staff. In spite of this, all of our volunteer editors are passionate about and committed to their positions.
